The Newtown Blackhawks 10 year old Travel Baseball team captured their Babe Ruth district 5 championship on Saturday, June 28 with an impressive 11-1 victory over Southbury. Newtown was 4-0 in the tournament. Following is a game by game recap:
June 21:
Newtown 10 Waterbury 0 (4 innings)
Dave Matthews and Luke Rustici combined on a 1 hitter as Newtown scored early and often in the first game of the Tournament. Newtown pushed across 4 runs in the first inning on only 1 hit, with the highlight Matthews steal of home. Matthews also stole home in the 2nd and 3rd innings. In the third inning, Michael Parker had a 2 run single. For the game, Matthews and Curtis Williamson each had 2 hits, while Matthews scored 3 times and Parker twice.

June 22:
Newtown 4 Southbury 1
In the best game of the tournament, great pitching and defense allowed Newtown to defeat a tough Southbury team. Matthews pitched 4 superb innings, allowing just 1 run on 4 hits and only one walk. Parker was just as good as he pitched 2 innings of 2 hit ball to pick up the save. Newtown pushed across a run in the first when Jaret Devellis (2 hits in the game) singled, stole 2nd, moved to 3rd on a Parker single, and then stole home. In the 4th, Nick Samuelson drove in Michael Doyle, who had doubled in the gap. Newtown added 2 in the 5th as Tim Krapf and Matt Maturo scored. The play of the game came in the 6th inning. Southbury had 2 on and 1 out when 1B Maturo fielded a hard hit grounder, stepped on first, and fired to SS Jack Proccaccini who applied a nifty tag to complete the game ending double play. Alex Klang wlaked and stole a base to help the
Newtown offense.

June 25:
Newtown 10 Oxford 1
Rustici and Williamson each pitched 3 masterful innings and held Oxford to only 4 base runners as
Newtown used a 7 run 3rd inning to defeat a competitive Oxford team. In the 3rd inning Newtown sent 12 batters to the plate. Krapf blasted a 2 run double to left center, Doyle had an RBI single, Rustici had a drive to deep right center that resulted in a sacrifice fly, and Parker completed the scoring with a 2 run double to right field. For the game, Devellis and Doyle had 2 hits apiece, while Devellis scored 3 runs and Parker 2. Alex Klang played solid defense in the outfield.

June 28:
Newtown 11 Southbury 1 (4 innings)
Matthews won his 3rd game of the tournament, as he allowed 1 run and 2 hits in 3 innings of work. Matthews was throwing heat as he struck out 7 batters. Parker pitched a scoreless 4th to seal the victory. Unlike the first game between these two teams,
Newtown scored 8 runs in the first 2 innings to put this one away early. In the first inning, Matthews 2 run triple was the highlight. He then promptly stole home. In the 5 run 2nd, Declan Sullivan and Krapf had rbi singles, Parker drove in 2 with a single, and Matt Maturo also had an rbi. In the 4th, Doyle and Proccaccini singled, and then Doyle scored from 3rd on a wild pick-off throw for the game ending run and championship. For the game, Devellis, Parker, Williamson, and Sullivan each scored 2 runs, while Matthews and Parker each drove in 3.

For the Tournament, Devellis led the team with 7 hits and a .778 batting average (his obp was an even loftier .833). Doyle added 5 hits and batted .455, while Williamson had 4 hits and batted .500. Parker drove in a team high 7 runs, while Matthews added 4. Devellis and Parker each scored 6 runs.
The pitching for
Newtown was held the opposition in check throuhout the tournament.  Matthews was 3-0 with a 2.00 era and 15 stikeouts in 9 innings of work. Rustici (1-0) had a 1.80 era over 5 innings with 7ks. Parker (1 save) and Williamson were perfect, not giving up a run in 3 innings each. Opponents batted only .192 against the formidable Newtown staff. The team is coached by Tim Doyle, Mike Maturo and Jim Parker.

The Newtown Blackhawks 10year old Travel Baseball team won the rain-delayed 15th annual Jimmy Fund Tournament, with a 12-4 victory over a good West Norwalk team. The Blackhawks ran their 2008 tournament record to 9-0. Following is a game by game recap:

June 10:
Newtown 8 Danbury 7 (8 innings)
In a true nail biter,
Newtown outlasted a stubborn Danbury team in extra innings. Michael Parker pitch 3 gritty innings in relief to earn the victory. Newtown jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first on a steal of home by Dave Matthews and a clutch 2 out 2 run double by Michael Doyle. Danbury answered with 2 in their half of the first and scratched out a run in the 5th to tie it. However, that was the only scoring until the explosive 8th. Newtown used 4 consecutive singles and a triple to deep left by Jaret Devellis (his third hit of the game) to score 3 runs. Devellis then stole home for what looked like an unneeded run. However, Danbury (who also had the winning run at 3rd in the 7th) plated 3 runs of their own and had the tying run at 3rd when Parker induced a grounder back to the mound for the win. For the game, Tim Krapf, Matt Maturo, Declan Sullivan, and Doyle each had 2 hits. Doyle, Krapf, and Devellis each had 2 rbi.

June 12:
Newtown 8 New Milford 7
Newtown jumped out to a 6-0 lead and then held on to defeat the 2007 New England Regional champions. Dave Matthews struck out 8 in 2 2/3 innings to earn the victory, while Luke Rustici limited the potent New Milford line up to 4 runs over the final 3 1/3 innings to pick up the save. Newtown's 4 run 3rd inning was highlighted by an rbi double by Krapf, and rbi singles by Doyle and Jack Proccaccini. Alex Klang wlaked and scored a key run during the rally. They scored another 2 in the 4th on Krapf's towering home run (estimated 225 feet) over the left centerfield fence, and Doyle's rbi double. With the tying run at third in the bottom of the 6th, Rustici induced a sinking liner that was caught by a diving Maturo at 1B to end the game. For the game, Krapf, Maturo, Doyle, and Proccaccini all had 2 hits and scored at least 1 run.

June 15:
Newtown 12 New Caanan 3
After a slow start against the hard throwing New Caanan starter, Newtown scored 4 in the 3rd, 5 in the 4th, and another 3 in the 6th for the victory against a strong New Caanan team.  Matthews pitched 3 scoreless innings (and only 1 hit) for the victory and Curtis Williamson pitched the final inning to close out the game. Parker, Rustici, and  Williamson only gave up 4 hits in the last 3 innings. For the game, Nick Samuelson, Devellis, Maturo, Matthews, and Doyle each had 2 hits. Devellis, Matthews, and Doyle each scored 2, while Maturo and Devellis each had 3 rbi.

June 17:
Newtown 8 West Norwalk 3
In the winners bracket finals, Newtown broke open a relatively close game with 4 runs in the bottom of the 5th for the victory. Matthews was again near perfect with 0 runs and 1 hit allowed over 3 innings. Parker pitched the final 3 for the save and would have completed the shutout except for some uncharacteristic miscues by the defense in the last inning. In that 5th inning, the big hit was a 2 out 2 run double by Rustici. For the game, Devellis (triple), Parker (double), and Maturo had 2 hits apiece. Proccaccini and Parker scored twice, while Krapf and Rustici had 2 rbi.

July 2:
Newtown 12 West Norwalk 4

Newtown overcame an early 3 run deficit with 9 runs in innings 3 through 5 to capture the Championship. Matthews again picked up the victory, while Rustici was stellar in relief, allowing 0 runs on 3 hits over the final 3 frames. Devellis had 3 hits (including a double), and Maturo 2 (with a double off the top of the right field fence). Sullivan also had a long double to left center in the 5th. Devellis and Krapf each scored 3 runs, while Matthews and Parker scored twice. Proccaccini had 3 rbi, while Krapf, Maturo, Doyle and Devellis had 2 each.

For the tournament, David Matthews was named MVP. On the mound, Matthews was 4-0 with 27 strikeouts in 14 2/3 innings.  Parker had a win and a save, while Rustici contributed 2 saves.
